Who We Are
Inside Out Community Arts was founded in 1996 by Camille Ameen and Jonathan Zeichner. Its genesis was The School Project, an after-school arts program Zeichner
implemented in 1993 in the wake of the Los Angeles civil unrest. Three years later, the program’s success and the urgent need for violence prevention/intervention programs for middle-school youth led Zeichner and fellow theater artist, Camille Ameen, to found
Inside Out Community Arts to grow The School Project. Inside Out has evolved steadily ever since,
creating new programs, adding sites and increasing the numbers of children served annually. Recently we have expanded our high school program portfolio.
Inside Out works in collaboration with the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), parents, the juvenile court, the Boys & Girls Club, Didi Hirsch CMHC and other community-based Organizations to meet the needs of youth throughout Los Angeles.
Inside Out operates year-round, administering programs at approximately 5 sites to 200-400 students per year, all
free to youth and families. Our organization has grown to include 4 full-time and 2 part-time staff, fifteen board members, and more than 36 professional Artist Leaders. Every member plays an important role in our success.
