Be an Alumni Mentor

Are you a high school student who is a graduate of an Inside Out program and doesn’t want it to end? Would you like to stay involved and help other kids participate in Inside Out? Are you responsible and willing to work hard as a volunteer? (that means the only pay you get is the satisfaction of knowing you’re making a positive difference in other kids’ lives and in your community) If you answered “YES” to these questions, then you are eligible to become an Inside Out Alumni Mentor!

If you’re still interested, complete the Alumni Mentor Application Form and have your parent/guardian complete the liability / medical / transportation release. Please e-mail or fax all forms to us ASAP (that means soon!). There are a limited number of positions available, so don’t delay. Good luck!

Alumni Mentor Job Description

Welcome Alumni Mentor! Following is a list of your responsibilities. Please feel free to ask questions and request help as you learn your job. And don’t forget to have fun!
  • Call the office if you are going to be late or absent: 310-397-8820
Theater Field Trip
  • Greet participants and hand out questionnaires
  • Keep participants orderly during lunch and activities – make sure everyone takes one drink.
  • Sit with your assigned group – get to know the kids and help them get to know each other
  • Help keep order in the theater
Working On The Plays At The Retreat (And After)
  • Help set up and clean-up rehearsal space
  • Work on and set up props and costumes
  • Enlist help from participants and encourage them to take responsibility and help each other out
  • Take notes / make suggestions / participate during rehearsals
  • Set up / clean up snacks at Sunday run-through
  • Let your director know if you can attend school rehearsals and/or the school assembly with your play group
  • Research your play group’s subject – prepare intro for the show
Other Responsibilities At Camp In Cabins
  • Help keep order
  • Tell ghost stories
  • Encourage cabin pride and teamwork
  • Take leadership role in activities/duties/clean-ups/etc.
  • Ask questions/discuss plays with your cabin mates
  • Lead and encourage kids in keeping bathrooms clean
At Meals
  • Sit with your cabin or play group as needed
  • Lead and encourage kids in cleaning up
Set Painting
  • Help set-up and clean-up work area
  • Participate with your group
  • Assist in making additional flats, props, etc.
On The Hike
  • Encourage kids – keep them on the path
  • Avoid poison oak
  • Don’t let kids litter
At The Campfire
  • Lead & encourage participation in drumming & dancing
  • Perform a ghost story
  • Don’t let kids litter
At The Beach
  • Keep an eye on kids in the water
  • Help distribute lunches & clean up
  • Don’t let kids litter
At The Performance
  • Arrive early to help set up (tell your director if you need transportation)
  • Help with your play group – keep kids focused backstage – run lines
  • Introduce yourself and your play group on stage
  • Help with reception and clean up
  • Talk to parents and kids – encourage kids to be interviewed
General Notes
  • Participate in all activities
  • You are part of a team – help the artists and other mentors
  • Don't spend all your free time with the other mentors, spend some time interacting with your younger peers - they can learn a lot from you
  • Be creative
  • Be a good role model
  • No romancing/flirting while on the job
  • If you’re not sure – ask one of the artist leaders
  • Feel free to make suggestions if you think something could be improved

Welcome back! We are pleased that you want to stay involved and help out. Being a mentor is a privilege, not a right. Before you enter the room, please note the following rules and expectations:
  • Inside Out alumni only – no guests unless you have cleared it with Camille or Jonathan in advance
  • You are a role model for the younger kids - come in with a positive, cooperative, outgoing attitude
  • Please enter quietly so as not disrupt the activities
  • Check in with a leader as soon as possible and find out what they need you to do
  • Be prepared to introduce yourself briefly to the group and explain why you want to stay involved as a mentor
  • Carry out your assignments and be on the lookout for additional ways to help leaders and support participants
  • Due to time constraints, you may not be chosen to participate in every part of the workshop
  • Some tasks you should be looking to help with:
    • Setting up chairs
    • Distributing workshop materials
    • Encouraging younger participants
    • Discouraging disruptive behavior
    • Leading by setting an excellent example
If you cannot abide by these rules, you may be asked to leave and/or you may become ineligible to be a mentor this year.
